RUN-IN OF REFURBISHED ENGINES:
As a driver, what is the best way to act when walking into an engine that has just been refurbished? From personal experience, it often appears to be difficult to answer that in practice. That is why we have tried to make the most general procedure possible. However, different advice may be used for each brand.
2 CATEGORIES
-> passenger car petrol and LPG engines
-> passenger car diesel engines
During the running-in period of an engine, the surface roughness of the machined parts decreases. Due to the higher roughness at the beginning of the run-in period, the affected parts can only emit a limited amount of heat. As a result, the load on the engine must be kept to a minimum during the run-in period. It is recommended to let an LPG car run on petrol for the first 2000 kilometres of the run-in period.
POINTS OF ATTENTION WHEN INSTALLING THE ENGINE:
-> Only installation by professional and trained staff
-> Replace the oil and oil filter according to factory data. When running into engines, a shorter refresh interval may need to be applied.
-> Turbo engines:
- With turbo engines, make sure that enough oil comes to the turbo and that the oil can also flow away resistantly (such as a kinked return line, etc.).
- also make sure that all suction pipes/hoses and the intercooler are clean
- maintain and regularly check engine oil and coolant
IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE LOAD, THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDATIONS SHOULD BE FOLLOWED:
-> Avoid high engine speeds when the engine is cold
-> Avoid high loads when the engine is cold
-> Avoiding long-term loads
-> Avoid low speeds with high loads
-> Use the choke as little as possible with older engines
-> Maintain engine oil and coolant levels
To put the above recommendations into practice for the various engine types, the following values can be used:
-> Do not press the accelerator more than ¾
-> Switch up at a maximum speed of:
- 3,500 rpm for a gasoline engine passenger car
- 2,500 rpm for a diesel passenger car
- 1,250 rpm for a truck engine
-> Do not switch up when the engine is too low
-> Avoid driving at a low speed in a high gear
-> Do not let the engine run at idle for more than 5 minutes
After a running-in period of approximately 5000 kilometers, the engine can be more heavily loaded. Following the above recommendations after the run-in period ensures a longer engine life and lower fuel consumption.
